HEALTH and Wellbeing – Learn to make a simple Mosquito Trap and fight back against DENGUE carrying mosquitoes.
- 2-liter plastic bottle (Coke, Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, Etc…remember, mosquitos can’t read!)
- 50 grams of brown sugar
- 1 gram of yeast (common bread yeast – packaged yeast found in any supermarket)
Cut the top of the plastic bottle off about 2/3 up from the bottom. Set aside the top portion.
Dissolve the brown sugar in 200ml of warm water and when cool, pour into the bottom half of the bottle. Add the yeast. No need to mix.
Insert the top 1/3 of the bottle (funnel part) upside down into the other half of the bottle with about one inch exposed above the top edge of the bottom part. Secure with black electricians tape (or other tape that may be available).
For best effect, wrap the bottle with something black leaving the top funnel part exposed.
Over time, the brown sugar and yeast mixture creates carbon dioxide and attracts mosquitos into the funnel and down into the bottle which they have a difficult time escaping. In about two weeks, you will see hundreds of mosquitoes that died inside the bottle.
In addition to clearing your home and other breeding sites of mosquitoes, this method can be very useful in schools, nurseries, hospitals, ranches, farms, etc.
Do not forget that just one mosquito carrying Dengue can kill! This simple method can help control the breeding mosquito population around the home and can help reduce the occurance of contracting Dengue.
Thanks to my friend John C. who brought this simple idea to our attention. This contraption has not been utilized by me personally therefore I cannot vouch for it’s validity, function, or effectiveness. Sounds like a plan though!
